Odyssey’s Communications Support Hummer Draws Attention

http://www.odysseyauto.com Odyssey Automative has always entertained challenging conversions and this Hummer lives up to that challenge. The customer required Odyssey to build this response unit to house their sensitive electronics equipment in shock resistant, climate controlled environments while being capable of cruising across the desert at 50 MPH. The first challenge was installing a 7500 watt commercial generator in the rear piped into one of the existing fuel tanks. Fresh air, exhaust and heated air vent through the bottom of the unit so a custom platform with separate compartments was fabricated. Fresh air comes in from the rear wheel well, past a splash shield then a replaceable filter then through the unit. The exhaust exits through the other wheel well then exits the rear corner by the bumper. The platform made replacing the air cleaner inaccessible so it was relocated into the rear compartment where fresh air came in through filtered louvers.

A 13,000 BTU air conditioning unit was also installed in the rear and ducted to each piece of equipment with a cool air and return air duct. The rear side window was replaced by a heavy duty aluminum lift up panel with louvers for the units hot air exhaust. The passenger side window was replaced by another lift up hatch accessing a climate controlled equipment cabinet.

Most of the sensitive equipment was installed in a cabinet on the rear transmission hump between the rear seats and in a custom cabinet replacing the front passenger seat. Isolating the rear utility compartment from the front operations area was an airtight wall with electrical controls and a removable hatch to access the rear of the generator and air conditioner.

One of the more interesting modifications was the antenna mounting platform. Given the instructions that the mounting area must be solid right through to the chassis Odyssey chose to fabricate a full rear roll bar and a custom extended roof fabricated from 1/4" aircraft grade aluminum. The top was designed to fit the roof of the vehicle and be watertight from the elements.

This was just another example that The Only Limit is the Imagination for Odyssey.
