BERNAILLO COUNTY — Former corrections officer Demetrio Juan Gonzales pleaded guilty to beating a man during booking, despite the fact that the man was not a physical threat.

According to ABQ Journal, the man identified only as “C.S.” was arrested for driving while intoxicated and was verbally uncooperative during the booking process.

Gonzales walked him to the shower room, where there were no cameras, and was followed by other corrections officers.

Gonzales then allegedly assaulted “C.S.” by striking him multiple times, leaving marks on the man’s skin and eventually causing him to bleed. He acknowledged that the beating was unjustified.

He faces up to 10 years in federal prison. Two other former corrections officers were also indicted and are awaiting trial.
