Conn. inmates express anger over porn ban

The Department of Correction announced in July that it would be banning all material considered pornographic

HARTFORD, Conn. — Prisoners in Hartford, Connecticut have begun a letter-writing campaign to protest what they see as an unfair ban on pornography inside the state’s correctional institutions, according to The Associated Press.

The campaign is in response to the Department of Correction’s summer announcement they will be banning all material that contains pictorial depictions of sexual activity or nudity from the prisons next summer.

Inmates have written about three dozen letters, claiming the ban violates the inmates’ first amendment rights. Some have suggested lifting the ban or providing inmates with alternatives such as “cable programming that offers and displays nudity, also sexual activity,” according to reports.

The state hopes the ban will improve the work environment for prison staffers, especially female officers who are inadvertently exposed to pornography.
