LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — An inmate at Lake Correctional Institute died Friday after a confrontation with a guard, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.
In an emailed statement, FDC officials said “an isolated incident occurred involving a use of force” at the Clermont facility on Thursday. The inmate was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and died Friday. The correctional officers involved are on administrative leave.
Details about the incident, including the names of the inmate who died and the guards involved, were not released. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and FDC inspector general will investigate the matter.
“If misconduct occurred, those responsible will be held fully accountable for their actions,” said FDC Communications Director Michelle Glady. “FDC will not tolerate the malicious application of the use of force.”
