SALINE COUNTY — Deputies at the Saline County Jail recently found a 7-inch shank underneath the mattress of an inmate while conducting a cell search.
The Salina reports that the shank was made out of a toilet bowl brush that had been sharpened into a point.
A second search of the same cell turned up a 9-inch long shank; what it was made of was unclear, but Sheriff Glen Kochanowski described it as “very, very sharp.”
Inmate trusties at the facility are entrusted with many cleaning tools – mops, brooms, buckets, among other things – that could easily be made into weapons.
Kochanowski acknowledged that staff needs to be doing a better job of collecting items entrusted to inmates and in searching cells for contraband.
