NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans authorities were searching Monday for an inmate who escaped from custody after being transferred from jail to Municipal Court for an afternoon hearing.

The inmate, Lionel C. Trumble, 38, remained at large after walking away from a “security line” at the courthouse, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Trumble had been jailed last week on several counts of illegal possession of stolen things.

Sheriff Marlin Gusman suspended a deputy accused of failing to follow proper security procedures “regarding the movement of inmates,” the agency said in a statement.

The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation and an “administrative review” of the incident.

The sheriff declined to release the name of the suspended deputy.

The U.S. Marshals Service was notified and is looking for Trumble, the Sheriff’s Office said.
