Crime doesn’t pay, but being unemployed does, at least for scores of New York state inmates.
The New York labor department is investigating claims that prisoners locked up in New York facilities have been collecting unemployment benefits.
WIVB CBS 4 reports that 126 prisoners have collected unemployment checks illegally at a cost of more than $400,000 in taxpayer money. That’s a heck of a lot of commissary candy and donuts.
Three hundred other cases are still under investigation, the report says.
