SCREVEN CO., Ga. – Cpl. Katherine Ponder thought she was speaking at the Sylvania Rotary Club about her decade as a deputy and school resource officer, but instead she was surprised with the Medal of Honor.
WTOC reports that three years ago, Cpl. Ponder stopped an inmate from escaping her patrol car, despite being shot in the leg. She was presented with the award by Sheriff Mike Kile.
“I really wasn’t expecting anything like this because they showed me so much love and support when it happened,” Ponder said. “It was just in the line of duty.”
