HARTFORD, Conn. — Five correctional officers were assaulted, three of them taken to the hospital, by an inmate in Hartford Wednesday, officials said.

The incident took place at the Hartford Correctional Center around 9:15 a.m. inside the facility’s admitting and discharge property room, the state Department of Correction said in a news release Thursday morning.

Three of the officers were taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, the release said, while the other two remained on duty after being evaluated.

“We recognize the serious concerns raised by this incident and will continue to ensure that our staff have the training, resources and support to perform their duties safely,” Interim Correction Commissioner Sharonda Carlos said in a statement. “I am grateful for the professionalism and swift response demonstrated by our staff, and I am committed to a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this assault.”

While Connecticut State Police are investigating the assault, the DOC “is reviewing the incident,” the release said. The identities of the inmate and officers involved are not currently being released, it noted.
