COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Cobb County sheriff’s deputy was attacked by a detainee at the Cobb Adult Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said in a Friday news release.
The sheriff’s office did not reveal when the attack happened or how the detainee was able to get to the deputy, but said the deputy sustained a concussion and a broken jaw. The deputy was taken to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
The detainee was a murder suspect awaiting extradition to Tennessee. The sheriff’s office did not disclose the detainee’s name.
The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit is investigating the incident and the circumstances surrounding it, the release said. More details will be released as it becomes available.
Cobb Sheriff Craig Owens commended jail staff for their quick response to the situation.
“Today’s incident serves as a stark reminder that despite our best efforts, detention center operations can be extremely dangerous,” Owens said in the release. “Our deputy remains in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery. I commend our jail staff and leadership for their swift actions to care for their coworker, protect other detainees, and maintain order.”
