ST. CLAIR COUNTY — Fifteen inmates were treated following a riot at the St. Clair Correctional Facility after a correctional officer was assaulted that same morning.
Al.com reports that after the officer was assaulted, a Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) was sent to the prison, which ADOC names standard procedure.
The facility was placed on lockdown and inmates were ordered to return to their cells; inmates in one block refused, according to ADOC.
The inmates refused a second order and “became unruly and aggressively engaged the response team with physical force.”
The inmates were armed with weapons including locks tied to belts, five knives and broken broom handles.
CERT disarmed the inmates with “reasonable force” and the cellblock was secured without further incident.
