ATHENS — A Limestone County Jail inmate faces an assault charge after punching a corrections officer, the sheriff’s department said.

Deputies arrested Edna Swanner, 44, of 17115 Coffman Road, Elkmont, on Saturday night while responding to a call about a suspicious person walking near Cross Key Road and Old Elkmont Road, said Lt. Jay Stinnett.

Deputies jailed Swanner for possessing a controlled substance after finding Xanax pills, Stinnett said.

On Sunday, after drug task force agents questioned Swanner, a female corrections officer escorted her back to jail, Stinnett said.

“She said Swanner started resisting and pulling away and then she turned around and struck the corrections officer with her fist upside the nose,” Stinnett said.

Stinnett said the officer complained of pain in her nose, but he did not know if she sought medical treatment.

Swanner, facing an additional charge of second-degree assault, remained in Limestone County Jail today in lieu of $10,000 bail.
