VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Virginia Beach inmate and two suspected accomplices have been charged with plotting to kill two police detectives and a witness, police announced over the weekend.
Ronald Mayfield Jr., a 27-year-old inmate at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, has been charged with three counts each of solicitation for murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Police say Mayfield used his girlfriend, Vernita Johnson, to communicate with Alexander Morris, a 31-year-old Virginia Beach man, while planning for Morris to kill two police detectives and a civilian witness.
Johnson, 25, and Morris face the same two charges as Mayfield. Johnson faces once count on each charge, and Morris faces two counts on each.
The charges were the result of an investigation that began in February, when police received information from an informant that Mayfield was planning to kill at Virginia Beach police detective as retribution for his arrest on weapons and narcotics charges. The investigation led to information on the other two intended victims.
Johnson and Mayfield were arrested in April after an undercover detective met with them do discuss the plans. All three suspects were indicted on the charges by a grand jury last week.
