SALINAS VALLEY, Calif. — Six inmates were taken to hospitals after fighting broke out Tuesday among dozens of armed inmates at a maximum-security prison in Central California, corrections officials said.

No employees were injured in the morning disturbance at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad, about 130 miles southeast of San Francisco.

“Numerous inmates started fighting,” said Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. “We don’t know how many were involved. You could say dozens. ... Numerous weapons were recovered.”

About 200 inmates were in the exercise yard when the fighting broke out.
