SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A new bill intends to improve transparency and accountability in the prison system by allowing reporters to request interviews with specific inmates.

AB1270 passed the Senate on Wednesday, according to the Mercury News, with the support of two dozen media organizations, groups supporting inmates’ rights and prison reforms, and the union representing most prison guards.

The only opposition it faces is from the Crime Victims Action Alliance and Sacramento’s district attorney.

Similar bills have been vetoed in the past by previous governors, claiming that the policy could allow media to glorify inmates and force victims to relive the crimes.
