NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News Sheriff’s Office and city officials will open a new jail annex today.

The new annex at 228 25th St. is expected to help relieve overcrowding and allow officials to provide more rehabilitation programs for inmates, jail officials said.

A ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. today at the new Newport News Adult Detention annex. Inmates have not yet moved into the low to medium security facility.

The annex kitchen will be used to teach culinary skills to inmates who also will be offered classes in sewing and computers, officials said. Brick masonry classes will be expanded.

Inmates in the work release program will be housed at the new facility.

Jail officials say that inmates who are trained and hired from the programs have kept their jobs after being released.
