CHARLESTON, S.C. — Dorchester County sheriff’s deputies are searching for an inmate who gave them the slip during a visit to Summerville Medical Center Tuesday morning.
Avery Clark, 21, was in custody for a parole violation stemming from a non-violent burglary when he left his assigned room around 2 a.m., according to a release.
Clark was admitted to the hospital around 10 p.m. Monday for fainting spells and back pain. Before being taken there, a Dorchester County jail nurse had recommended that he seek treatment.
Dorchester County detention staff was assigned to guard him during his hospital stay, the release stated. Early Tuesday, Clark asked to use the bathroom in his room. When a detention officer went to check on him, he had disappeared from the bathroom.
Clark was last seen wearing black and white striped prisoner garb. The investigation is ongoing and the detention officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.
Clark is 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs about 175 pounds and has a noticeable cleft palate, deputies said.
