JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. — A man who was released from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is now being sought in the brutal beating of an inmate.

Arkansas Matters reports that Paul Washington was punched in the head and body by fellow inmate George Austin Jr. It’s believed that Washington was defending his brother. He was later taken to the hospital, where he is still receiving surgeries.

Austin was released two days after the beating; a representative from the sheriff’s office says they knew he was involved with the beating but not to what extent.

They didn’t believe Austin was a flight risk and released him on schedule; now they have no idea where he is.
