LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A Lake County corrections officer was arrested Friday after authorities said she slapped a handcuffed inmate in the face during her shift less than two months ago, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Saturday.

A corrections officer who witnessed the incident said Alicia Hathaway, who’s worked at the jail since March 2016, slapped the inmate during a Jan. 21 shift after the inmate cursed at her, the agency said.

Hathaway was booked into the jail for battery on a $1,000 bond and has since been released.

The sheriff’s office, which runs the Lake County Jail, said it began termination proceedings against her.

Hathway’s had no previous disciplinary actions against her nor do Lake County court records show previous arrests.
