PORT ORCHARD, Wash. — A 34-year-old Kitsap County Jail inmate accused of trying to steal a boat from the Bremerton Marina was charged with felony assault for throwing liquid on a corrections officer trying to remove a “Merry Christmas” sign covering the man’s cell window.
Jean Paul Ungureanu was charged in October with first-degree theft and first-degree malicious mischief for allegedly trying to leave the marina in a $335,000 sailboat. The man had told Bremerton police he was tired of concrete and wanted to “sail like a pirate,” according to court documents.
He was charged Wednesday with third-degree assault for the Dec. 3 incident with the corrections officer, who wrote in court documents that officers had asked Ungureanu to remove the handmade Christmas sign, but he “babbled incomprehensibly.”
Two officers planned to open his cell door and grab the sign, but when they opened the door Ungureanu threw the liquid from a milk carton.
