CAYUGA COUNTY — When Benjamin M. Gilfus visited Keri A. Sheppard-Kline at the Cayuga County Jail, prison officials found reason to believe their meeting wasn’t purely social.

According to a press statement released Thursday afternoon by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, officers witnessed “suspicious activity” when Gilfus visited Sheppard-Kline at the jail on Nov. 3. After an investigation, officers discovered Gilfus allegedly gave Sheppard-Kline Suboxone, a semi-synthetic opioid used to treat drug addiction or chronic pain.

Officers said Gilfus stopped by the jail again on Nov. 7 to visit Sheppard-Kline. Before the 30-year-old Auburn man could meet with the inmate, he was intercepted by officers, who ascertained that Gilfus once again possessed Suboxone.
