TRENTON, N.J. — A CO has been charged with smuggling drugs into a state prison after several inmates overdosed.

According to NJ.com, officials launched an investigation after several inmate overdoses were reported. They did not provide an official number of victims.

Michael Marrero, 33, was charged Dec. 6 with official misconduct, money laundering, conspiracy to distribute drugs, bribery and conspiracy to use certain electronic communication devices in correctional facilities.

Prosecutors told the publication that witnesses provided information on how the contraband was smuggled in.

Marrero is accused of smuggling heroin, suboxone, marijuana, tobacco and a cell phone, according to the report.
