ATTICA — A convicted murder stole an officer’s baton and injured several guards during a Saturday assault at Attica Correctional Facility, union officials said.

“It took a couple minutes to subdue him from the start of the assault,” said spokesman James Miller of the New York State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association Inc. “There were at least four C.O.’s injured.”

The assault occurred about 8:30 a.m. as the officers were releasing inmates from their cells for breakfast, officials said in a news release.

Inmate Theodore Haynes, 31, of Brooklyn allegedly attacked a guard unprovoked, at the front gate of an undisclosed cell block. He struck the officer twice in the left side of the face, union officials said. He was then able to grab the guard’s baton away.

The guard tried immediately to secure Haynes behind the end gate, but he allegedly blocked it from closing. Another officer responded, and Haynes is accused of striking both with the baton. Union officials said the responding officer was able to strike Haynes with his baton in order to move him back form the gate.
