QUEENSLAND, Australia — On May 5, prisoners and COs will no longer be able to smoke on jail grounds in Queensland.
In order to combat the expected uptick in inmate violence, potentially coming from long-term smokers going through withdrawal, officials have been attempting to distract inmates with food and exercise equipment.
A shopping list totaling $766 obtained by the Courier Mail detailed the food items: smoked oysters, premium ice cream with toppings, party pies and more.
Corrections officers and staff have also received special training, though there is some disagreement about whether or not it was in addition to regular annual training or just the same.
