DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. — A gang member who was on death row for killing a U.S. Marine and a teenager was found dead in his cell.

KESQ reports that Emilio Manuel Avalos, 40, was pronounced dead last Wednesday after being found in his cell at San Quentin State Prison. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of his death.

Avalos had been on death row since 2013 for the killings of Marine Cpl. Henry Lozano, 20, and Jahi Collins, 17. Avalos shot and killed Collins in 1994 in a park that was considered gang territory. In 2001, Avalos followed Lozano after he visited the residence of the gang member’s ex-girlfriend and gunned him down.

The shootings were unresolved until he was charged with the murders in 2006. He was convicted in 2012.
