HAMILTON, Ala. — With nearly 2,000 open positions, the Alabama Department of Corrections is looking for corrections officers.
“We’re understaffed,” said Lt. Todd Wheat of the Alabama Department of Corrections told WTVA.com. “Inside these facilities, it’s a hard battle when you got the [officer] numbers lower than the inmates.”
The department has 1,800 open positions, including correctional officer trainees and a few other positions. It is the largest law enforcement agency in Alabama with about 3,000 correctional officers and 1,000 non-uniformed support personnel. They manage an in-house population of more than 25,000 inmates.
