SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — An autopsy has confirmed that Corrections Officer Amanda Baker of the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center died from strangulation.
According to The Omaha, Scotts Bluff County Attorney Doug Warner plans to charge inmate Dylan Cardeilhac, 15, with first-degree murder today.
CO Baker had been checking on adult prisoners about 2 a.m. Friday when she entered Cardeilhac’s cell. The teenager allegedly grabbed Baker from behind and strangled her with his arm.
It’s jail policy for at least two officers to be present when a cell is entered; why Baker went into the cell alone is under investigation.
Warner said Baker may have been “too trusting” of the young inmate.
Baker was declared brain dead Friday afternoon and kept on life support until her organs could be donated for transplant.
