MASSILLON, Ohio — Newly released surveillance video shows the moment an inmate at the Indian River Juvenile Correctional jumped and beat a correctional officer.
The video from the October 2022 attack shows Officer David Upshaw walking down the hallway and pausing by every cell door to make sure the inmates were locked in, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Moments later, the video shows Demetrice Taylor, 19, sneaking up behind Upshaw. That’s when Upshaw felt something hit the back of his head, according to the report.
“I could feel something behind me. When I turned to see what it was, I could just feel blood on my head,” Upshaw told USA Today Ohio.
Upshaw told USA Today Ohio that the juvenile offenders were frustrated due to lengthy periods of confinement in their cells following altercations, and he was instructed to keep them inside.
During that evening, Taylor manipulated his door lock and attacked Upshaw using his computer tablet and radio. Upshaw reported that his emergency button was non-functional, USA Today Ohio reports. However, he managed to make it to the communal room on his own to seek assistance.
Upshaw was working alone the night he was attacked, according to a USA Today Ohio investigation. He was severely injured and said he still suffers from vertigo and needs to use a walker to get around.
