ST. LOUIS — Authorities say a Missouri inmate is facing a federal charge of threatening to kill President Barack Obama after writing a threatening letter from prison.
The U.S. attorney’s office in St. Louis said Tuesday that 32-year-old Josh Randall McCallum mailed the letter in August from the Northeast Correctional Center in Bowling Green. A redacted indictment doesn’t specify where the letter was addressed.
The state corrections department says McCallum has been incarcerated since 1999. He remains at the prison on tampering and burglary charges.
Threatening to kill the U.S. president carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
The U.S. attorney’s office says it was unclear Tuesday whether McCallum had a defense attorney. One wasn’t named in court documents.
