Contraband: Hidden needles in the mail

A C1 member wrote, “Please find attached, 5 photos of an incoming mail piece that arrived to our facility today. The mail piece is a standard 6" x 8 1/2" cardboard mailer that has a self-adhesive strip on the back of the mail flap.

The intended recipient need only pull on the pre-perforated “zip-strip” to open these type of envelopes. We receive many of these in our mailroom every week.

“Today, our mail room Sergeant noticed that the self-adhesive flap was partially pulled up and decided to open the envelope in a non-traditional manner. Attached by standard cellophane tape to the underside of the mail flap were 5 metal sewing needles. If the mail-flap had been properly closed, and our Sergeant had used the motorized letter opener or utilized the “zip-strip” for its intended purpose, 5 metal sewing needles would have delivered to an inmate.

The metal sewing needles were carefully placed below the “zip-strip” line and would have gone completely unnoticed, because the flap would have remained “sealed” and the needles were enclosed within.

“Given the totality of the situation, I would say this was a very good catch by our Sergeant.”
