ELMORE, Ala. — Two state prison employees are facing multiple drug and contraband charges.

The Alabama Department of Corrections on Friday announced the arrests of Niana Longmire and Carmelo Hopkins.

Their positions at Elmore Correctional Facility were not disclosed, but officials said both have resigned from ADOC.

The investigation began on June 28 when ADOC K-9 handlers and narcotics agents conducted a joint probe into suspected contraband activity involving the two employees.

Longmire admitted to previously introducing contraband into the facility and identified additional contraband which was recovered by K-9 handlers and agents before it entered the facility.

Longmire is charged with conspiracy to commit drug trafficking – fentanyl, conspiracy to commit drug trafficking –methamphetamine, conspiracy to commit drug trafficking – opioids, conspiracy to commit drug trafficking – synthetic cannabinoids, first-degree promoting prison contraband, and second-degree promoting prison contraband.

ADOC officials said further investigation showed that Hopkins knowingly conspired in the criminal activity.

Hopkins is charged with conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime, and first-degree promoting prison contraband.

Investigators confiscated fentanyl, meth, spray paper, flakka, two folding knives, two USB drive, 2 pair of AirPods, a digital scale, 10 earbuds, 12 cell phone and 10 USB cords.
