CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. — A Clackamas County defendant who slashed his throat in open court Monday used a fragment of razor blade so small it passed through state-of-the-art screening and a pat down without detection, possibly hidden in the man’s wheelchair.
Sgt. Robert Wurpes, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said an investigation confirmed that Terry Lee Barnes, a 55-year-old transient, had gone through the security system and was scrutinized by contract security screeners.
“It appears security operated within procedural guidelines,” Wurpes said. “Mr. Barnes’ person and wheelchair had been patted down and visually inspected by DePaul Security as he entered the courthouse, and his belongings and jacket had been X-rayed.”
