PASCO — A Franklin County correctional officer suffered two broken ribs after a jail inmate on suicide watch allegedly attacked him with a large metal key.
Justin Husom, 40, was treated and released from a local hospital following the attack Thursday night inside the Pasco jail. Husom also had cuts to his elbows.
An officer was feeding Antonio Davis-Ramos, 24, at 6:23 p.m. when she noticed the inmate had taken off his suicide smock and was naked in the cell, said Capt. Rick Long of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Davis-Ramos pushed his way out of the cell when the officer opened the door to inspect the smock, Long said. Husom went to help the officer.
Davis-Ramos took a four-inch metal key that is used to open cell doors off one of the officers and attacked Husom with it, jabbing it into his upper chest and rib area. Davis-Ramos then tried to use the key to open another door in the jail, Long said. “His plan was to try and get out of here,” Long said. “The key didn’t even work in the door.”
It took five officers and pepper spray to get Davis-Ramos back in his cell, Long said. The inmate had no marks on him after the incident. Husom — who has worked in the jail for more than three years — was at the hospital for more than four hours before returning to work to write a report, Long said. He will work away from inmates while his injuries heal.
