ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Ala. — Law enforcement officers searched Fountain Correctional Facility in Escambia County on Monday and rounded up 621 makeshift weapons, 51 cell phones, 240 grams of synthetic drugs and seven gallons of an alcoholic drink that prisoners call julep or pruno, the Alabama Department of Corrections said.

It was the sixth time the ADOC has joined with local, county and state law officers to crack down on contraband at a state prison.

More than 300 officers took part in the 10-hour operation at Fountain, which holds about 1,230 inmates. They came from police departments in Atmore, Bay Minette, and Brewton, and sheriff’s departments in Baldwin, Clarke, and Escambia counties. Others came from the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s K-9 unit, the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, and the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The ADOC said people should report information about contraband in prisons to the Investigations and Intelligence Division at 1-866-293-7799. People can also report suspicious activity to the ADOC website.
