SANTA FE, NM — A sheriff’s report said a Santa Fe man tried to smuggle a folding knife into jail in his anal cavity and while being searched tried to harm corrections officers.

The report said Carlos Martinez, 42, was being held on suspicion of bringing contraband into the Santa Fe County jail and two counts of aggravated battery.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the jail around 10 p.m. Friday in response to a report that an inmate tried to stab a corrections officer with a folding knife, the report said.

Records show officers had been booking Martinez into jail in connection with two Rio Arriba County warrants charging failure to appear in court in connection with an unspecified prior case.

According to a deputy’s report, a corrections officer said that due to Martinez’s “violent” history the officer had to perform a strip search but Martinez was uncooperative and threatened the officer, stating he was “going to kick his [expletive],” according to the report.

While one officer was searching Martinez’s pants in the changing room, the report says, another officer tackled Martinez to the floor after seeing Martinez reach back and pull an item from his anal cavity.

The report says that after the knife fell to the ground Martinez took “an aggressive stance that appeared like he was going to swing” with his fist, the report says.
