JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — An inmate fashioned a toy gun and used it in an escape attempt at the Losperfontein prison in Brits on Sunday, ending in his death.
IOL News reports that Floyd Mabena, serving time for murder, robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm, held two correctional officers at gunpoint using the fake weapon and tied them up with tape. He then used a uniform and keys from one of them to move through the prison.
He also threatened another officer to hand over his vehicle. The inmate then drove toward a nearby town.
A high-speed chase then followed between Mabena and prison officers. As the chase ensued, Mabena pointed his fake firearm at officers, who retaliated with live ammunition.
Mabena was shot and killed near an off-ramp.
No other injuries were reported. It’s unclear what the fake weapon was made of.
