JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. — A 36-year-old Georgia man is accused of using a drone to try to smuggle drugs, cell phones and smart sunglasses into an Alabama prison.
David Anderson, of Jonesboro, is charged with conspiracy to promote prison contraband, Alabama Department of Corrections officials announced Tuesday.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m. on June 12, an ADOC investigator received a public complaint about a drone and a suspicious package on state property near William Donaldson Correctional Facility in western Jefferson County.
The officer responded and recovered the drone and large black duffle bag filled with contraband.
The tipster also mentioned a suspicious vehicle fleeing the scene, and a lookout bulletin was issued.
The vehicle was stopped by police in Heflin. Anderson was taken into custody and interviewed by ADOC investigators at the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office.
He was then transferred to the Jefferson County Jail, where he was released on bond.
The confiscated contraband included:
- 3 pounds marijuana
- 400 ml suspected synthetic narcotic
- 36 cell phones
- 38 charger cords
- 7 pairs of smart sunglasses
- Assorted tobacco products
The investigation is ongoing.
