Ga. healthcare workers fired for noticing medical malpractice

Workers claim that when they brought their concerns to the sheriff, they were fired days later

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Former Chatham County Jail healthcare workers have filed a lawsuit over wrongful termination, saying they were fired for bringing up medical malpractice concerns to the sheriff.

FOX News reports that the Corizon Health Inc. workers noticed that inmates were not receiving proper care; for example, if an inmate needed to go to the hospital, an onsite doctor would have to get the request approved from a third party manager who was offsite.

The healthcare workers filed internal complaints to Corizon, and when they received no response, they took their concerns to the sheriff. Only days after their meeting with the sheriff, the workers claim, they were fired.

“What seems clear is that Corizon does not want the sheriff and doesn’t want government officials to know how poorly they are, in fact, doing,” said Attorney Will Clairborne, who is representing the workers.

Corizon responded with the following statement: ‘Corizon Health has not been served with the lawsuit you reference. But it’s important to note that we are committed to providing quality care, and we support the dedicated professionals who work at the Chatham County facility.’

The lawsuit has since been filed.
