NASHVILLE — About 900 Davidson County jail inmates were tested for HIV on Saturday in what health nonprofit Nashville CARES was touting as the largest single-day testing event at a correctional facility.

It was in conjunction with World HIV Testing Day, which was Friday.

“They’re a marginalized population,” said Lisa Binkley, lead corrections navigator coordinator with Nashville CARES. “In federal facilities, one in every seven that goes through is HIV-positive. So this population doesn’t have a lot of control over their health care. This is the best opportunity to provide them with a test for an illness now that is completely manageable if you get on the medication.”

The testing event was a part of Nashville CARES Linkage-2-Care program, a three-tier initiative that involves testing, educating and advocating for inmates with HIV.
