PENDLETON, Ind. — Following the discovery of an infected inmate, 381 other Pendleton Correctional Facility inmates were tested for TB.

Indy Star reports that fifty inmates tested positive and will undergo additional testing to see if they have the active disease.

In April, 418 staffers had a routine, annual skin test to check for tuberculosis; 47 missed that test and will now be tested.

Seven staff members tested positive in April and have undergone treatment. So far there is no indication that anyone else has active tuberculosis, according to Amy Kent, communications director for the Indiana DOC.

“We’re testing everyone else just to make sure … We take a very aggressive approach in our control plan.”

Everyone who tested negative will be retested in about 10 weeks to ensure they have not become infected.

The individual who tested positive for the active disease was transferred to the Miami Correctional Facility, where he is receiving the standard four-drug regimen for active TB in an isolated room.
