ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Orangeburg County’s tab for inmate medical care is half what it was before it hired a Georgia company to administer health care services at the detention center.

The county is paying an average of $4.63 a day per inmate, compared to around $9 when TransformHealthRx of Statesboro, Ga. arrived on Nov. 1, Regional Clinical Accounts Manager Laura Busbin said.

“It is steadily coming down and will continue to come down over the coming months,” Busbin said.

Busbin spoke to Orangeburg County Council about jail health costs at a recent council retreat. Orangeburg County has taken control of the jail, which was once overseen by a commission, in an effort to save money.

The detention center has seen a total $2 million operating loss over the past four years.
