Kan. prison gets upgrades following assault on nurse

Nurses at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility will be wearing new alarm pendants

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nurses at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility will be wearing new alarm pendants, following an assault on one of the nurses last summer.

A simple push of the button on the pendant will sound an alarm, according to Hutch News.

Each alarm also has an identifier so that the prison control center knows whose alarm is sounding.

The system has yet to be installed, but in the interim the prison has distributed radios to all contract employees. The radios also have an alarm feature and identifier.

Only corrections officers had the radios before, but now all 116 contract workers have radios starting two months ago.

Officials want nurses to have pendants though, to keep their hands free.

Steven Stumpner, 28, was charged with rape or an alternate count of aggravated sexual battery for the incident that happened on July 17.
