CHICAGO — Lorry Schoenly, RN, PhD, RN, CCHP-RN, has been named the NCCHC B. Jaye Anno Award of Excellence in Communications award winner for 2013. She is the first nurse to receive the award.

This award pays tribute to innovative, well-executed communications that have had a positive impact on the field of correctional health care, or to individuals for bodies of work. The award is named after NCCHC’s cofounder and first vice-president, Dr. B. Jaye Anno. Dr. Anno presented the award to Dr. Schoenly at the National Conference on Correctional Health Care in Nashville, TN.

Dr. Schoenly, a nurse educator by vocation, has been a prolific communicator dedicated to keeping the field knowledgeable about new trends and critical topics. She co-edited and wrote seven chapters of Essentials of Correctional Nursing, a much-lauded text that was released in 2012. She also contributed to the American Nurses Association’s 2013 edition of Correctional Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. She often writes for NCCHC’s CorrectCare and other periodicals.

Dr. Schoenly also embraces the new media. She writes a blog at CorrectionalNurse.net, produces podcasts, is an online columnist and has a lively presence on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. She was instrumental in introducing NCCHC and its constituents to social media. In accepting the award, Dr. Schoenly commented “It is a great honor for my work to be acknowledged by correctional health care leaders. My primary goal is to inform, encourage and inspire those providing patient care in the criminal justice system.”
