SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. — A man arrested Friday on drug-related charges by Campbell police died suddenly as he was being booked into Santa Clara County’s main jail.

Shortly after his arrival at the San Jose jail about 5:45 p.m., while the man was being processed by sheriff’s deputies, he went into medical distress and the jail’s staff began to administer CPR, said sheriff’s Sgt. Jose Cardoza.

The San Jose Fire Department was summoned, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Cardoza declined to identify the man until the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office could notify his family.
