SALEM, Ore. — Lawmakers are poised to create a panel to look at the costs of health care for inmates in state prisons and county jails.

Sen. Jackie Winters, the measure’s chief sponsor, said taxpayers have a big stake in results that she vowed will not sit on a shelf.

“I think it’s time to have a comprehensive discussion about ways we can lower our costs and report recommendations to the next legislative session,” said Winters, a Republican from Salem who is co-chairwoman of the Legislature’s budget subcommittee on public safety.
