IONIA, Mich. — Prison authorities are waiting on results to find reasons why over 100 inmates at the Richard Handlon Correctional Facility became sick earlier this month.
WOOD TV reports that inmates came down with some type of gastrointestinal illness, according to Michigan Department of Corrections spokesperson Chris Gautz.
The illness began to spread, eventually affecting over 100 inmates. As of Tuesday, 21 inmates have been quarantined in their cells.
Officials say that three new cases were reported Tuesday but that the number of sick inmates is going down.
Inmates who became sick were given a clear liquid diet, and prison officials say the sickness usually lasted for about a day and a half.
Visitation was still available for inmates who were not sick, and prison activities continued to run normally.
