Committee: Monitoring of Ohio women’s prison should continue

Staff stability at the Dayton Correctional Institution has been a problem and no mental health programs were conducted in over a month despite a need for such programs

DAYTON, Ohio — A correctional facility inspection committee says monitoring should continue at a troubled women’s prison in Dayton despite signs of improvement.

The Correctional Institution Inspection Committee says staff stability at the Dayton Correctional Institution has been a problem and no mental health programs were conducted in over a month despite a need for such programs.

The committee also said in a report released this past week that more needs to be done to create a cohesive program that helps women inmates re-enter society.

The committee praised the facility for filling all mental health positions and for improving its enforcement of a federal anti-prison rape law.

A February review noted inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates, the availability of prohibited substances and problems with mental health services.
