ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Seven employees with the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center, including four supervisors, are on leave after surveillance video sparked an investigation into an inmate beating.

Officers were conducting a shakedown on inmate Amanda Chavez’s cell when the footage shows officers pepper spraying and tackling Chavez to the ground without provocation, according to KRQE. Chavez is restrained with shackles on both her arms and legs throughout the entire incident.

As Chavez is taken to the ground, more and more officers respond. The entire incident spans about 10 minutes. There is no sound to the video.

The incident, according to officials, is under investigation.

Chavez has a long criminal history, including battery on a peace officer, conspiracy to commit murder and dealing drugs. It’s unclear what she was serving time for in this particular incident.
