GUATEMALA CITY — Prison officials in Guatemala say seven bodies have been found in garbage barrels inside a maximum security prison.
Prison system spokesman Rudy Esquivel said Wednesday that prison officials found a body in a garbage barrel and then little by little discovered the others.
Esquivel said officials were still working to identify the victims, but they suspected they were gang members because they were found in a part of the prison holding members of the Marasalvatrucha gang. They all appeared to have been asphyxiated.
United Nations office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights representative Alberto Brunori urged the government to investigate the more than 20 prisoners killed in prisons this year.
In the same El Boqueron prison, authorities found three prisoners dead in a bathroom on Aug. 8.
