RIO DE JANEIRO – A bloody prison uprising that has left at least four inmates dead at the hands of fellow prisoners ended Tuesday morning after an agreement was reached with negotiators.

The NY Times reports that leaders of the revolt and prison negotiators agreed that hundreds of inmates would be transferred to other penitentiaries.

The riot lasted 45 hours, starting on Sunday, and left at least four inmates dead, two by beheading while a third was thrown off the prison roof. It also included clashes among factions inside the prison.

Prisoners rioted over food quality and over accusations of physical abuse by the corrections officers.

Reports of a higher death toll are still pending a thorough inspection of the prison. It remains unclear how the prisoners in Cascavel organized the uprising.
